Resumo: In view of the current world scenario combined with technical and scientific advances, new challenges arise for the identification and explanation of methodologies for Geography teaching. In this context, the map language appears as a possibility of study of place from the elaboration of geographic concepts, referring to the living space. This work aims to point out the relevance of mapping material to the Geography teaching as of representations of the place for mobilization of spatial thinking. The development of this research was based on studies of cartographic material of the school atlas of the municipality of Jacobina-Bahia. The analyses show the contribution of the School Cartography in understanding geographical concepts with emphasis on local aspect

Este trabalho tem por objetivo destacar a relevância dos materiais cartográficos para o ensino da Geografia a partir de representações do lugar para mobilização do pensamento espacial. O desenvolvimento desta pesquisa se deu a partir de estudos do material cartográfico do atlas escolar do município de Jacobina-Bahia.
