Elements of controversial argumentation in televised political debate: confrontations around issues of public interest

Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the functioning of controversial argumentation in excerpts from the televised pre-election debate held by the broadcaster Band, within the framework of the 2018 presidential race. Two excerpts from the debate involving presidential candidates and the themes of abortion and privileges with public money were analyzed. This research was theoretically grounded on the fields of rhetoric, argumentation, and discourse studies, particularly in the works of Plantin (2008), Amossy (2017), and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2014). It was found that controversial argumentation can occur based on logos and ethos, in the first sequence analyzed; but it can also occur based on pathos and the disqualification of the opponent, according to the second analyzed sequence.

Se analizarán dos extractos del debate entre los candidatos presidenciales y los temas del aborto y privilegios con dinero público. Esta investigación se basó teóricamente en los campos de la retórica, la argumentación y los estudios del discurso, particularmente en los trabajos de Plantin (2008), Amossy (2017) y Perelman y Olbrechts-Tyteca (2014). Se encontró que la argumentación polémica puede darse a partir del logos y ethos, en la primera secuencia analizada, pero también puede ocurrir en base en el pathos y la descalificación del oponente, según la segunda secuencia analizada.Este trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar o funcionamento da argumentação polêmica em recortes do debate televisionado pré-eleitoral realizado pela emissora Band, no quadro da corrida presidencial de 2018. Foram analisados dois trechos de debate envolvendo os candidatos à presidência e os temas do aborto e dos privilégios com dinheiro público. Esta pesquisa fundamentou-se teoricamente nos campos da retórica, dos estudos de argumentação e do discurso, particularmente nos trabalhos de Plantin (2008), Amossy (2017) e Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2014).
