Resumo: This study aimed to investigate how hyperonymic and hyponymic relationships are established in Libras and in Portuguese, seeking to identify the strategies used by deaf and hearing children to refer to animals. An experiment was applied in which pictures with different species of animals were presented to deaf and hearing children so that they could identify them through naming (elicited production). The results showed that deaf and hearing children performed more hypernyms (they used the more general name of the species) than hyponyms (names that would designate subspecies) with a statistically significant difference. For the deaf group, among the strategies used in differentiating entities of the same species, the strategy of naming by a phrase containing a modifier stood out. For the group of hearing, the use of standard lexical items stood out.
