The identity of Cerro Largo (RS) from two monuments of Praça da Matriz

In this paper we discuss the identity of Cerro Largo, a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), through the analysis of two monuments in Praça da Matriz (the main square of the city), located in the center of the urban space. It is a qualitative and exploratory study that problematizes the constitution of the urban space with the utterance as the unit of analysis. For this work we mobilize the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Bakhtin’s studies. In order to understand the meanings generated by the materialities selected for analysis, we have tried to apply the methodology of comparison between texts recommended by Geraldi (2012). Thus, we find that German colonization and Catholic religion are socially valued. We also found that the monuments erected in the square that is considered the main square of Cerro Largo act in the (con)formation of an identification for the city based on ethnic and religious elements, and that other social groups, even if not present in this identity, constitute it from the outside. We conclude that the identity of the city projected by the two monuments is an expression of the colonial base.
