Degrees of attachment between the verbs of periphrasis V1 (E) V2 from a variation-grammaticalization interface perspective

In this article, under the light of a variation-grammaticalization interface perspective, I address the usage of verbs IR (GO) and PEGAR (TAKE) in periphrasis V1 E (AND) V2, in which V2 is the core lexical verb and IR and PEGAR are the auxiliary grammatical verbs V1 codifying global aspect. The more attached the auxiliary verb is to the main verb, the more advanced is the auxiliary verb grammaticalization process, I aim to asses the degree of attachment between PEGAR and IR to V2 in distinct speech communities. For that, I analysed three factors: presence of the conjunction E between V1 and V2, presence of pause between V1 and V2 and presence of intervening material between V1 and V2. I made use of speech data drawed from Discourse & Grammar corpora from Natal (RN) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and from VARSUL Data Base of Florianópolis (SC). The results, obtained through quantitative analysis, show that: (i) in Natal, IR and PEGAR exhibit similar behavior; (ii)  in Rio de Janeiro, IR is more frequent in periphrases without conjunction E and without pause, which evinces a greater degree of attachment to V2; (iii) in Florianópolis, it is PEGAR that displays a greater degree of attachment to V2. These differences point to a further advance of the grammaticalization process of IR in Rio de Janeiro and of PEGAR in Florianópolis. In Natal, the grammaticalization of both verbs seems to be at the same pace.
