BRAZILIAN EDUCATION AND GEOGRAPHIC THINKING: reflections on geography teaching and new high school

Resumo: Brazilian education has undergone some changes in recent decades, overcoming pedagogical approaches and practices that were merely content and descriptive to act as an important instrument of social transformation and civic education. In view of this, the State began to perceive education as an indispensable tool for overcoming Brazil’s social problems.  In this context, Geography worked in collaborating with the instruction of students, assisting in the development of a better understanding of the world and in the conception of new values and critical sense, contributing actively to the development of Brazilian education. Currently, under the new parameters proposed by BNCC and instituted through the New High School, Geography is relegated to another level, being seen only as a component of the human sciences. This article seeks to reflect on the paths that followed Brazilian education and school geography, dealing with the adversities to be overcome by Geography and its teachers.

This article seeks to reflect on the paths that followed Brazilian education and school geography, dealing with the adversities to be overcome by Geography and its teachers.  La educación brasileña ha sufrido algunos cambios en las últimas décadas, superando enfoques y prácticas pedagógicas meramente conteudistas y descriptivas para actuar como un importante instrumento de transformación social y formación ciudadana. En vista de ello, el Estado pasa a ver la educación como herramienta imprescindible para la superación de los problemas sociales brasileños. En ese contexto, la Geografía actuó de modo a colaborar en la instrucción de los alumnos, auxiliando en el desarrollo de una mejor comprensión del mundo y en la concepción de nuevos valores y de un sentido crítico, contribuyendo activamente al desarrollo de la educación brasileña. Actualmente, bajo los nuevos parámetros propuestos por la BNCC e instituidos a través de la Nueva Enseñanza Media, la Geografía es relegada a otro nivel, siendo vista como solo un componente de las ciencias humanas. Este artículo busca reflexionar sobre los caminos que siguieron la educación brasileña y la geografía escolar, tratando de las adversidades a ser superadas por la Geografía y sus profesores.A educação brasileira passou por algumas mudanças nas últimas décadas, superando abordagens e práticas pedagógicas meramente conteudistas e descritivas para atuar como um importante instrumento de transformação social e formação cidadã. Em vista disso, o Estado passa a ver a educação como ferramenta imprescindível para a superação dos problemas sociais brasileiros.  Nesse contexto, a Geografia atuou de modo a colaborar na instrução dos alunos, auxiliando no desenvolvimento de uma melhor compreensão de mundo e na concepção de novos valores e de um senso crítico, contribuindo ativamente para o desenvolvimento da educação brasileira. Atualmente, sob os novos parâmetros propostos pela BNCC e instituídos através do Novo Ensino Médio, a Geografia é relegada a um outro patamar, sendo vista como apenas um componente das ciências humanas.
