A history of the French language from a sociological perspective: Marcel Cohen’s methodological approach

Resumo: In 1947 the French linguist Marcel Cohen published a history of the French language marked by an explicitly sociological perspective. The author, a disciple of Meillet and a convinced communist, proposes to study French and its evolution as a social fact, the evolution of the communicative system being mainly determined by external factors. Following the analysis of Cohen’s theoretical principles – the dialectics of differentiation and unification; entanglement of diachrony and synchrony; the linking of internal and external linguistics – his interpretation and his periodization of the history of the French language are examined here. In the concluding assessment, the strengths and weaknesses of Cohen’s approach are pointed out.
