SOLIDARITY AND EDUCATION : A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE ‘FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL’ FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF NEOLIBERAL EDUCATIONAL PROPOSALS

Resumo: | The aim of this paper is to present a preliminary discussion on the ‘Friends of the School Project’. Begun in 1999 and operating for six years, it is the result of an initiative taken by the Globo Television Network which has been directing it along with the projects ‘Brazil 500 Years on’ and the Solidarity Community. It was set up to encourage community participation in order to improve public schools. This preliminary analysis sets out to question and reflect on three issues which fan out into a number of other extremely important issues, considered essential to understanding the hegemonic neoliberal project which has formed around the theme of solidarity associated with educational issues: the attempt of the State to renege on its obligations and leave the community responsible for the operation and maintenance of public schools; the attempt to privatize public school on the grounds of their poor quality and high running costs as compared with the benefits provided; and, the attempt to tarnish the image of educational professionals working in public schools, to question the need for and functions of these schools and call on society to compensate for what is wanting in these professionals. |

O projeto, que teve início em 1999, é uma iniciativa da Rede Globo de Televisão, que o desenvolveu concomitantemente com o Projeto Brasil 500 Anos e o Comunidade Solidária, e destina-se a fortalecer a participação comunitária no esforço de melhoria da escola pública.
