Resumo: | Introduction: The sickle cell anemia (SCA) stands out as one of the most important epidemiological genetic diseases in Brazil and around the world. It is a chronic and incurable disease, even though it is treatable. It generally causes high levels of suffering to its bearers, who deserve special attention from a medical, odontological, genetic, and psycho-social perspective. Objective: Evaluate the knowledge of the academic odontology students and dentist surgeons about the sickle cell anemia. Material and Methods: The study is exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative and quantitative approach. The data were collected through a self-applicable questionnaire with 293 participants, composed by 186 academic students and 107 dentist surgeons. Results: The results from the present research revealed that most participants consider themselves to have few knowledge about SCA, even though they recognize the importance of the subject. Besides, they present a lack of sufficient information about the oral manifestations that this patients may show. Conclusion: After the analysis, it was verified that a large share of the participants of the research have little knowledge about this disease. There is a need of better insertion of this subject in odontology degree courses, along with more researches about the theme. Thus, it is possible to contribute to the improvement of Sickle Cell Anemia patients’ quality of life. |
