This work analyzes the strategies used by a teacher in teaching the concept of the food chain and the meanings and meanings built by the children in a science class in the early years of elementary school. Based on studies on language, we analyzed two distinct events that contemplate the verbal interactions about the concept of the food chain in a classroom. First, we present the presentation of the concept of the food chain by the teacher and how children produce meanings to words during the process of understanding the concept. In the second event we identified the presentation of other concepts related to the theme of the class and the difficulties that the understanding of the food chain model entails. Thus, starting from Bakhtinian presuppositions, the fundamental question present in this article is the discussion of the dialogical nature of the process of understanding the concept of the food chain.
