A sea in tiles: The waves of Varejão and Warburg’s Pathosformeln

Resumo: The article investigates the artwork Celacanto provoca maremoto, produced between 2004-2008, by Adriana Varejão (1964) alongside theoretical questions opened by the notion of Pathosformel, created by Aby Warburg (1866-1929), and its developments thought by Georges Didi- Huberman (1953). In addition to the layers of historical elements, the installation produced by the artist for the gallery dedicated to her artwork at Instituto Inhotim is investigated from three axes: the Pathosformel of the body in accentuated movement; the relationship between ethos and pathos contained in capturing a transitory form through the hardness of a tile; finally, the spectator's experience in front of the image accessed in its empathic dimension. Au-delà des strates d’élements historiques, l'installation produite par l'artiste pour la galerie dédiée à l'œuvre à l'Instituto Inhotim est explorée à partir de trois axes: le Pathosformel du corps en mouvement acentue; la relation entre ethos et pathos contenue dans la capture d'une forme transitoire à travers de la dureté d'un carreau; enfin, l'expérience du spectateur face à l'image accédée dans sa dimension empathique. Le texte confronte cette image à d'autres images, selon une logique associative.O artigo investiga a obra Celacanto provoca maremoto, realizada entre 2004-2008, por Adriana Varejão (1964) ao lado de questões teóricas abertas pela noção de Pathosformel, cunhada por Aby Warburg (1866-1929), e seus desdobramentos pensados por Georges Didi-Huberman (1953). Para além das camadas de elementos históricos, a instalação produzida pela artista para a galeria dedicada à sua obra no Instituto Inhotim, é investigada a partir de três eixos: a Pathosformel do corpo em movimento acentuado; a relação entre ethos e pathos contida na captação de uma forma transitória pela dureza de um azulejo; por fim, a experiência do espectador diante da imagem acessada em sua dimensão empática.
