Changes in higher education: why it is imperative to research about professors’ think

Resumo: The universities’ social role in global economies has been confronted and refurbished in the last years. New pedagogical guidelines claim legitimacy in the ‘knowledge society’ and challenge the professors’ identity and practice. Nevertheless, the conflict between the institutional tradition and these new demands encourage discussions on democracy and autonomy. It is not a matter of discussing whether or not teachers are prepared, but rather how each teacher will perceive, reflect and experience the miscellany of conditions, interests, values, moralities and philosophies embodied in these changes. The development of new experiences by professors, their reflections in practice and craft knowledge, become essential objects of study. The researches that are willing to reverberate the professors’ voices, schematizing and elucidating their reflections, acquire meaning and relevance.

Outras diretrizes pedagógicas e didáticas requerem legitimidade na chamada sociedade do conhecimento, desafiando a identidade e a prática dos docentes universitários. Conflitos entre a tradição institucional e essas novas demandas se impõem, pondo em evidência debates sobre democracia e autonomia. Mas o que está em jogo não é apenas se a docência universitária está ou não preparada para essas transformações, senão, como a amálgama de condições, interesses, valores, moralidades, filosofias e conhecimentos de cada professor as perceberá, refletirá e vivenciará. A mobilização e a produção de novos saberes pelos professores, as suas reflexões e a consciência em ação tornam-se imprescindíveis objetos de estudo.
