Resumo: The present article is part of a study that had as one of its objectives to investigate the life stories and formation of teachers, emphasizing the influences and motivations of teachers for teaching in higher education. This is a qualitative research that investigated six professors working in the Pedagogy courses at a public university in Bahia. The semi-structured interview was the instrument of data collection used and, for the treatment of the data, it was used content analysis. The results of the research showed that the life story and formation, the experiences of schooling, family influences, the relationships established with peers, as well as the social context in which teachers are inserted are factors that are part of the temporal dimension of teaching knowledge and have repercussions in the choice and subsequent exercise in higher education.

Se trata de una investigación de enfoque cualitativo que investigó a seis profesores que trabajan en los cursos de Pedagogía de una universidad pública de Bahía. La entrevista semiestructurada fue el instrumento de recolección de datos utilizado y, para el tratamiento de los datos, se utilizó el análisis de contenido. Los resultados de la investigación evidenciaron que la historia de vida y la formación, las experiencias de escolarización, las influencias familiares, las relaciones establecidas con los pares, así como el contexto social en el que se insertan los profesores son factores que forman parte de la dimensión temporal del conocimiento de los profesores y repercuten en la elección y en el posterior ejercicio en la educación superior.O presente artigo é parte de um estudo que teve como um dos seus objetivos investigar as histórias de vida e formação dos docentes, enfatizando as influências e motivações dos professores para a docência do ensino superior. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa que investigou seis professores atuantes nos cursos de Pedagogia de uma universidade pública da Bahia. A entrevista semiestruturada foi o instrumento de coleta de dados utilizado e, para o tratamento dos dados, recorreu-se à análise de conteúdo.
