Resumo: This study is based on Symbolic Interactionism, and describes the social experience of HIV-positive mothers who lived through the uncertainty of having infected their child during pregnancy. Ten women were interviewed, some still awaiting the result. The analysis showed that mothers experience anxiety and guilt, despite information about the chances that the child was not infected as a result of antiretroviral treatment. Distrust, fear or a desire to die, a hope that the situation is not real, fear of discrimination, and concern about their children in case they die translate into breaks and creation of new social interactions, based on forms of secrets.

Se llevaron a cabo entrevistas con diez mujeres que esperaban o que ya habían recibido el diagnóstico del hijo recién nacido. El análisis mostró que las mujeres tienen sentimientos conflictivos de ansiedad y culpa, a pesar de habérseles informado que con el tratamiento con anti-retrovirales hay posibilidades de que el bebé no se contagie. Las madres sienten desconfianza, miedo, ganas de morir, desean que esa situación no sea real, temen la discriminación y se preocupan por el cuidado del hijo, o de los hijos, si llegaran a fallecer. Todos estos sentimientos crean rupturas y nuevas interacciones sociales estructuradas en el secreto.Estudo fundamentado no Interacionismo Simbólico com o objetivo de compreender a experiência social de mulheres grávidas infectadas pelo HIV, diante da possibilidade de infecção dos filhos. Foram realizadas entrevistas com dez mulheres que aguardavam os resultados do recém-nascido ou já haviam passado pela experiência de tê-los recebido. A análise mostrou que há sentimentos conflituosos de ansiedade e culpa, apesar das informações sobre as possibilidades de não-infecção do bebê com o tratamento com anti-retrovirais.
