Trait and state of anxiety among nursing students during a practical test

Resumo: This study aims to identify the state-trait anxiety level and the different feelings of nursing students before a practical test of semiology and semiotechnic and to compare the level of anxiety with the performance in the test. The study took place at a private nursing faculty of Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil. Forty five students from the 2nd year of the Nursing Faculty of the Israeli Hospital Albert Einstein were evaluated. Data was accessed by the Spielberg, Gorsuch and Lushene's (1970) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results showed that most pupils presented average level of anxiety-traces (89%) and state (64%). The most frequent reported feelings were anxiety (44.2%) and fear (17.4%). Pearson's correlation test did not show significant relation between the anxiety-state of the students and their grades on practical test. We conclude that students were worried and anxious about the imminent evaluation of their practical skills. However, they were able to deal with these feelings and to create efficient confrontation mechanisms to avoid the potential negative effects of excessive anxiety and nervousness.

El estudio fue desarrollado en un instituto particular de educación superior del municipio de São Paulo. La muestra estuvo constituida por 45 alumnos de 2o. año de Enfermería. Para la recogida de datos fueron utilizados el Inventario Trazo-Estado de Ansiedad de Spielberger, Gorsuch y Lushene (1970). Los resultados indicaron que la mayoría de los alumnos presentaban nivel medio del trazo de ansiedad (89%) y estado (64%); los sentimientos relatados con mayor frecuencia por los alumnos fueron ansiedad (44%) y miedo (17,4%); la prueba de correlación de Pearson no mostró relación significativa entre la calificación de la prueba práctica y el nivel del estado de ansiedad de los alumnos. A pesar de estar preocupados y ansiosos con las técnicas que podían exigirse en la prueba práctica, los alumnos fueron capaces de controlar sus sentimientos y construir mecanismos para enfrentarlos de forma adecuada y minimizar los efectos negativos de ansiedad y tensión.Neste estudo, teve-se como objetivo identificar o nível de traço e de estado de ansiedade, bem como os sentimentos dos alunos de graduação em enfermagem antes da prova prática da disciplina Semiologia e Semiotécnica, e correlacionar o nível de ansiedade encontrado com o desempenho na prova. O estudo foi desenvolvido em uma instituição particular de ensino superior do município de São Paulo. A amostra foi constituída por 45 alunos da 2ª série do Curso de Graduação de Enfermagem. Para a coleta de dados foi utilizado o Inventário de Ansiedade Traço-Estado de Spielberg, Gorsuch e Lushene (1970). Os resultados desse estudo foram: a maioria dos alunos apresentou médio nível de traço (89%) e de estado (64%) de ansiedade; os sentimentos relatados com maior frequência pelos alunos foram ansiedade (44,2%) e medo (17,4%). O teste de correlação de Pearson não mostrou relação significativa entre a nota da prova prática e o nível do estado de ansiedade dos alunos.
