Idiomatic resources of the classical guitar as a vehicle for composition: analysis of selected Brazilian composers

Resumo: The main objective of this article is to approach the concept of idiomatism in the context of classical guitar (violão) composition, through the analysis of works by guitarist composers who resorted to aspects of the construction and practice of the instrument as a primary vehicle for writing musical pieces. These composers, namely Heitor Villa-Lobos, Dilermando Reis, Garoto and Guinga, departing from the exploration of idiomatic possibilities of the instrument, developed a set of composition techniques that will be identified. The idiomatic elements we considered more significant explained the use of composition strategies based on the particularities of the instrument, and to identify not only musical elements such as scales, harmonic progressions and rhythms, but also other resources related to poetic, cultural, and communicative aspects of musical discourse.

Estos compositores, a saber, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Dilermando Reis, Garoto y Guinga, partiendo de la exploración de las posibilidades idiomáticas del instrumento, desarrollaron un conjunto de técnicas de composición que serán identificadas. Los elementos idiomáticos que consideramos más significativos explicaron el uso de estrategias de composición basadas en las particularidades del instrumento, y para identificar no sólo elementos musicales como escalas, progresiones armónicas y ritmos, sino también otros recursos relacionados con aspectos poéticos, culturales y comunicativos del discurso musical.Este artigo tem como objectivo principal abordar o conceito de idiomatismo no contexto da composição para violão, através da análise de obras de compositores violonistas que recorreram aos aspectos da construção e prática do instrumento enquanto veículo primordial para a escrita de peças musicais. Estes compositores, nomeadamente Heitor Villa-Lobos, Dilermando Reis, Garoto e Guinga, partindo da exploração das possibilidades idiomáticas do instrumento, desenvolveram um conjunto técnicas de composição que iremos identificar.
