Resumo: | Aging is an inevitable and gradual process during lifespan. Detrimental effects of the aging process include anatomic and functional dysfunction, especially with muscular loss. This aging condition presented by losing muscle and strength is defined as sarcopenia. Systematic strength training in elders could promote gain of muscle strength and flexibility. Based on that information, this study establishes a relationship between strength training and the benefits of that training to minimize sarcopenia. A literature review was performed throughout national and international papers and books subject related. Recent 49 articles published after 2010 were selected in several data bases like Capes, Scielo, Medline, Lilacs and Google academics. One of them were selected as a baseline for this study: Silva e Farinatti (2007), and recent periodic were used to compare the results. Therefore was observed that exercise of medium intensity with 80% of one maximal repetition test (1RM), during three series and three times a week obtained the most satisfactory results in elders. However, efficiency in this training program depends on several variables like number of series, repetition, frequency and weekly training, strength level, series intervals and exercises sequences. In conclusion, strength training must be part of a general physical training in elders due to minimize sarcopenia (muscle atrophy and decrease of muscle strength), however further studies should be conducted in order to approach and compare all variables that interfere in strength training in elders. |

Dentre todas as perdas que ocorrem com o envelhecimento no organismo humano a principal acomete o sistema muscular. A diminuição da força e massa muscular associada ao envelhecimento é definida como sarcopenia. A prática sistemática de treinamento de força em idosos pode promover aumento da força, da massa muscular e da flexibilidade. Com base nestas constatações, este trabalho propõe estabelecer relações entre o treinamento de força e os benefícios deste treinamento, como vistas a minimizar os efeitos da sarcopenia no idoso. Foi realizada uma revisão de literatura através de artigos nacionais e internacionais e de livros relacionados ao tema. Procuraram-se artigos recentes, do ano de 2007 em diante, junto à base de dados Capes, Scielo, Medline, Lilacs e Google acadêmico, sendo selecionados 49 artigos. Deste total de artigos o estudo feito por Silva e Farinatti (2007) serviu de ponto de partida para este trabalho e a partir daí buscou-se periódicos mais recentes com intuito de verificar os resultados encontrados pelos mesmos. Constatou-se que intensidades médias de 80% de 1RM, três series e com uma freqüência semanal de três vezes, apresentou ganhos satisfatórios de força nesta população, porém a eficiência deste treinamento depende da manipulação das variáveis estruturais (número de séries, número de repetições, freqüência semanal, intensidade da carga, intervalos, ordem dos exercícios). Portanto o treinamento de força deve fazer parte de um programa geral de treinamento físico para idosos, para minimizar a sarcopenia (atrofia muscular e decréscimo de força muscular).
