Resumo: This work analyzes the responsibility of grandparents in ensuring the well-being and financial stability of their grandchildren, a concept known as "avoengos alimentos". This responsibility, both from a legal and a social point of view, is frequently debated, especially due to its subsidiary nature, which becomes relevant when parents are unable to effectively fulfill their obligation to support their children. The complexity of this topic is recognized in the Brazilian legal system, as it is also debated by scholars. In a complementary way, the work demonstrates identifying under which circumstances grandparents may be called upon to fulfill the duty of providing food to their grandchildren, considering the theoretical and legal foundations that underlie this dilemma. Likewise, it analyzes the impacts of this parental food responsibility on the lives of grandparents. In order to achieve these goals, methodological resources were used that encompassed doctrines, jurisprudence and scientific articles relevant to the field of family law.

Essa responsabilidade, tanto do ponto de vista jurídico, quanto social, é frequentemente debatida, especialmente devido à sua natureza subsidiária, que se torna relevante quando os progenitores não conseguem cumprir efetivamente sua obrigação de sustentar os filhos. A complexidade desse tema é reconhecida no ordenamento jurídico brasileiro, como também é debatido por doutrinadores. De forma complementar, o trabalho demonstra identificar em quais circunstâncias os avós podem ser chamados a cumprir com o dever de fornecer alimentos aos seus netos, considerando os fundamentos teóricos e legais que embasam esse dilema. De mesmo modo, analisa quais são os impactos dessa responsabilidade alimentar avoenga na vida dos avós.
