The challenges in the teaching and learning process in Youth and Adult Education (EJA) have interfered in the development of Basic Education students in Tocantins. Overcoming obstacles inside and outside the classroom is a major factor in the academic life of those directly involved in the process. This research presents an investigation with a quantitative approach, motivated by the concern to understand the personal challenges faced by students and that influence the teaching and learning process in Youth and Adult Education (EJA). Thus, we have as a guiding question “What are the main personal challenges faced by EJA 1st grade students?”. Thus, the objective is to identify the personal challenges faced by students who study at EJA at Francisco Máximo de Sousa State School in Araguaína-TO. The methodological procedure is the Case Study and to obtain information, we applied a diagnostic questionnaire consisting of thirteen questions. The analysis of the results shows evidence that these challenges have been influencing the student development of these students.
