Resumo: Education for Youth and Adults (EJA) emerged in a society permeated by political resistance in the context of a society formed by different social classes. In this sense, education, as a public and subjective social right, was historically denied to those who live from the sale of their workforce. In this perspective, this article aims to discuss the historical trajectory of EJA in Brazil. Thus, bibliographic and documental research was selected as a methodology. This is a study with a qualitative approach. The theoretical support was in the studies of Ribeiro (1993), Eugenio (2004), Gohn (1997), Costa Neto (2009) and others. In relation to the documents, we analyzed the Constitution of 1988, Law of Directives and Bases of National Education of 1971 and 1996, National Education Plan of 2001, Fund for Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and for the Valorization of Education Professionals – FUNDEB. Finally, from our study, we realized that the process of EJA consolidation in our country was marked by struggles between those who were always able to have access to education and those who, at an early age, dropped out of school and assumed responsibility. with the family's financial life.
