Esta pesquisa considera a tradução como intrínseca à comunicação humana, levando-se em conta o aspecto performativo da linguagem. O estudo do processo criativo e da tradução beckettiana nos permite analisar como o autor e dramaturgo realiza a tarefa da autotradução, não apenas no nível linguístico, mas também dos livros para os palcos, como diretor de suas próprias peças. A autotradução também é vista como um processo de se traduzir entre línguas e culturas: como irlandês morando na França, Beckett muitas vezes escolheu escrever as primeiras versões de suas obras em francês, sua segunda língua, antes de traduzi-las para o inglês. Em sua discussão sobre a autotradução, este trabalho concentra-se em uma análise da peça como uma obra bilíngue e propõe que entre as versões francesa e inglesa dos textos de Beckett, um espaço intersticial emerge, formando um terceiro texto. Dessa maneira, o estudo da obra bilíngue leva em conta a noção beckettiana de unword, um conceito que remete à "pura língua" de Walter Benjamin. A leitura comparada das versões francesa e inglesa também permite a investigação da iterabilidade como tema e método no processo criativo de Beckett, no qual a autotradução é vista como uma forma de autorrepetição. A peça também é analisada como uma metáfora do exílio e como uma representação do estado desolado da condição humana no contexto do pós-guerra. Nesse sentido, o espaço intersticial ou entre-lugar é representado no palco quase vazio da peça, que simboliza uma espécie de limbo, onde as personagens estão eternamente à espera de Godot. Esta pesquisa conclui que Beckett escolheu a autotradução principalmente como um meio artístico para repetir, continuar e expandir sua própria arte, de forma que o significado de sua obra bilíngue depende da soma dos três textos: original, tradução e o terceiro texto, ou texto metalinguístico.This thesis examines Samuel Beckett’s translation process in En attendant Godot/ Waiting for Godot, his first published and most well-known play. This research considers translation as intrinsic to human communication, taking into account the performative aspect of language. The study of Beckett’s creative process and translation enables us to analyze how the author and playwright performs the task of self-translation, not only at the linguistic level, but also from page to stage, as director of his own plays. Self-translation is also viewed as a process of translating oneself between languages and cultures: as an Irishman living in France, Beckett often chose to write the first versions of his works in French, his second language, before translating them into English. In its discussion of self-translation, this work focuses on an analysis of the play as a bilingual work and proposes that between the French and English versions of Beckett’s writings, an interstitial space emerges, forming a third text. In this manner, the study of the bilingual work takes into account the notion of Beckett’s unword, a concept akin to Walter Benjamin’s “pure language”. The comparative reading of the English and French versions also enables the investigation of iterability as a theme and method in Beckett’s creative process, where self-translation is seen as a form of self-repetition. The play is also analyzed as a metaphor for exile and as a representation of the hopeless state of the human condition in the postwar context. In this sense, the interstitial or in-between space is represented on the nearly bare stage of the play, which symbolizes a kind of limbo, in which the characters are endlessly waiting for Godot.
