The challenges of gender and race in public higher education: an analysis in Brazil’s Northeast

Resumo: This article aims to analyze the results of recent changes in  Brazil’s public higher education, following the growth, and expansion towards the hinterland, of campuses and universities, together with the introduction of affirmative action in college admissions. The data was analyzed locally at the Federal University of Pernambuco and comes from a broad spectrum cross-sectional study of race and gender, which are the focus of this work. The study of these specific categories is justified by the cumulative inequalities experienced by women and black people. The results obtained show that there was an increase in the participation of black women in undergraduate programs, while post graduate programs still present a majority of white students. The racism manifested in society and in academia is reflected by the statistics, and is confirmed by accounts of interpersonal racism, described by self-declared black students, at the university environment.

Os dados utilizados para a análise realizada neste trabalho foram coletados a partir de um estudo executado na Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, sendo provenientes de um estudo de corte transversal de amplo espectro, do qual extraiu-se, para atingir os objetivos desse trabalho, as informações sobre raça e gênero. O estudo dessas categorias específicas justifica-se pelas desigualdades experienciadas pelas mulheres e pelos negros. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que houve um incremento na participação de mulheres negras na graduação, enquanto os programas de pós-graduação ainda apresentam discentes majoritariamente brancos.
