The challenges of gender and race in public higher education: an analysis in Brazil’s Northeast

This article aims to analyze the results of recent changes in  Brazil’s public higher education, following the growth, and expansion towards the hinterland, of campuses and universities, together with the introduction of affirmative action in college admissions. The data was analyzed locally at the Federal University of Pernambuco and comes from a broad spectrum cross-sectional study of race and gender, which are the focus of this work. The study of these specific categories is justified by the cumulative inequalities experienced by women and black people. The results obtained show that there was an increase in the participation of black women in undergraduate programs, while post graduate programs still present a majority of white students. The racism manifested in society and in academia is reflected by the statistics, and is confirmed by accounts of interpersonal racism, described by self-declared black students, at the university environment.
