Após estabelecer a necessidade de conhecer tais motivos investigou-se, na Revisão da Literatura, conceitos de "motivação", "necessidades" e "objetivo"; os motivos foram classificados segundo Gardner e Lambert e McDonald e Sager; outras pesquisas nesta área também foram comentadas. Os objetivos deste trabalho vêm abaixo relacionados: - investigar os motivos dos alunos para estudar inglês ; - relacionar esses motivos às características dos alunos; - verificar a habilidade de maior interesse para os alunos e o grau de satisfação de suas necessidades. No que se refere à metodologia, as pessoas que compuseram o universo desta pesquisa eram alunos de oito escolas particulares de inglês e duas universidades, com idade acima de 16 anos. 0 levantamento de dados consistiu na aplicação de um questionário com 28 perguntas a 1.500 alunos, sendo que retornaram 1.416 para a análise dos dados. Com relação aos objetivos acima, várias hipóteses foram testadas com auxílio de testes estatísticos de significância, sendo o principal o teste Qui-Quadrado ao nível de significância de 0.5. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho foram os seguintes: Os motivos mais citados pelos informantes para estudo da língua inglesa foram "atividade profissional" como o mais frequente, estatisticamente significativo, o que vale tanto para escolas particulares de inglês como para as escolas de nível superior. Em segundo e terceiro lugares, respectivamente, foram citados como tendência geral, "gosta desta língua" e "quer saber uma língua estrangeira". Com relação à variável "sexo", verificou-se um desvio da tendência geral acima exposta entre os alunos do sexo masculino, e na variável "estado civil" apenas os casados afastaram-se da tendência geral. Quanto à variável "idade", os alunos na faixa etária de 19 a 21 anos afastaram-se da tendência geral quanto ao motivo classificado em terceiro lugar, ao passo que os de 28 a 39 anos desviaram-se da tendência geral quanto aos motivos classificados em segundo e terceiro lugares. Tanto os alunos de 16 a 18 anos como os de 40 anos ou mais apresentaram um certo desvio da tendência geral. No que se refere a variável "curso em andamento", os alunos dos Setores de Tecnologia, Ciências Exatas, Ciências Agrárias afastaram-se da tendência geral assim como os do Setor de Ciências Biológicas e Ciências da Saúde. Os alunos do Setor de Ciências Humanas, Letras e Artes, Educação e os do Setor de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas desviaram-se da tendência geral quanto ao motivo classificado em terceiro lugar. Houve um certo desvio da tendência geral para os alunos que não estavam freqüentando nenhum curso na época e para aqueles que estavam se preparando para o vestibular. Na variável "profissão", os alunos que tinham como ocupação ser estudante, aqueles que se enquadravam nas profissões liberais e os empregados de escritório afastaram-se da tendência geral. A habilidade "falar" foi a habilidade de maior interesse para os alunos. Os que escolheram como habilidade de maior interesse tanto "falar" como "escutar/entender" não se desviaram dos motivos aduzidos como tendência geral, enquanto que os que apontaram "ler/entender" afastaram-se da tendência geral quanto aos motivos classificados em segundo e terceiro lugares respectivamente. Os alunos que tinham escolhido a habilidade "escrever" desviaram-se um tanto da tendência geral assim como os que tinham optado para "todas as habilidades". O grau de satisfação das necessidades dos alunos no curso regular foi de 60% enquanto que nas escolas particulares o grau de satisfação foi de 80%. Os resultados acima sugerem que as escolas ofereçam cursos de inglês a nível de graduação e cursos de extensão à comunidade que tenham como base as necessidades ocupacionais dos estudantes.Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate students' motives for studying English in private schools of English and universities in Curitiba. After establishing the need to know the motives, the concepts of "motivation", "needs" and "objective" were investigated in the Review of Literature; motives were classified according to the frameworks provided by Gardner and Lambert McDonald and Sager and a number of other research projects in this area were also reviewed. The objectives of this study were as follows: - to investigate students' motives for studying English; - to relate these motives to the students' characteristics; - to discover which skill students were most interested in and the degree to which their needs were satisfied. Concerning methodology, the subjects of the research, were students at eight private schools of English and two universities, all aged over 16. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire applied to 1.500 students, 1.416 of whom returned the questionnaire. Avariety of hypotheses were tested through statistical tests of significance, the main one being the Chi-Squared at the 0.5 level of significance. The results of this study were as follows: The main motives for studying the English language which were chosen by informants were "professional activity" - this was the most frequent, with a significant difference -both in private schools of English and universities. In second and third position, respectively, subjects chose "like this language" and "wants to know a foreign language" as a general tendency. With regard to the "sex" variant either the masculine students or the feminine ones deviated from the general tendency, and with regard to the variant "marital status", the results showed a deviation from the general tendency shown above, concerning the married students. With regard to the variant "age", students between 19 and 21 deviated from the general tendency, concerning the motive classified in the third position while the ones between 28 and 39 deviated from the general tendency related to the motive classified in the second and third position. Either the students between 16 and 18 or those 40 and above presented some deviation from the general tendency. With regard to the variant "course attended", the Area of Technology, Pure Sciences, Agrarian Sciences deviated from the general tendency as well as the Area of Biological Sciences and Health Sciences. Students of the Area of Human sciences, Letters, and Arts, Education deviated from the general tendency with regard to the motive placed in the third position. There was some deviation from the general tendency among the students who were not attending any courses at the time and those who were preparing to enter university. As regarding the variant "profession", the students whose occupation was to be a student, those of liberal profession and office clerks deviated from the general tendency. Students were most interested in the "speaking" ability. Students who had chosen either the "speaking" ability or the "listening/understanding" ability did not deviate from the general tendency, while those who had chosen "reading/understanding" ability deviated from the general tendency, concerning the motives classified in the second and third position. Those who had chosen the "writing" ability as well as the ones who had chosen "all abilities" deviated from the general tendency. The degree of satisfaction of the needs of students attending an English course at school or university was 60%, while in private schools of English the degree of satisfaction was 80%.
