SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN MANAGEMENT’S EDUCATION: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY ABOUT THE VISION OF THE STUDENTS

Resumo: The objective of this paper was to study the perceptions of undergraduate business management students about the teaching of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). In this context, a quantitative research method was employed. As empirical setting, we interviewed eighty five students of four different universities in the state of Rio de Janeiro who either attended the last year of business school or graduated one year before. Data was collected by a questionnaire based on a previous qualitative study of the authors Silva and Chauvel (2009). The results showed that the students considered CSR to be a very important subject of study. However, the respondents believed that CSR is only superficially addressed in undergraduate programs. They believed that the degree of attention dedicated to CSR was insufficient and superficial. In their view, they have learned more about CSR in magazines, newspapers and at work than in business school. In addition to that, they revealed to have numerous questionings about the theme CSR. Last but not least, they believed the teaching of CSR should be more emphasized, both from theoretical and practical perspectives. Therefore, a relevant field of study from the students’ standpoint is the understanding of how firms translate CSR into practice.

Therefore, a relevant field of study from the students’ standpoint is the understanding of how firms translate CSR into practice.El presente artículo tuvo el objetivo de estudiar la percepción de los estudiantes de Administración en relación a la enseñanza de la Responsabilidad Social Corporativa (RSC) en la graduación. Para eso, fue realizada una pesquisa de campo que consistió en 85 entrevistas hechas mediante un cuestionario elaborado con base en los resultados del estudio cualitativo de Silva y Chauvel (2009). El cuestionario fue aplicado la alumnos de graduación que pertenecían la cuatro instituciones de enseñanza superior del Estado de Rio de Janeiro y estaban listos a graduarse o se habían graduado el pasado año. Los resultados apuntaron que los entrevistados consideran la RSC un tema importante. Mostraron que ellos perciben que el espacio dado al asunto en la graduación es insuficiente y evalúan que el tema es abordado de forma superficial. Los estudiantes declararon que aprendieron más sobre RSC en medios externos a la facultad, como requisas, media, periódicos y en el propio trabajo. Además, los entrevistados mostraron tener dudas y cuestionamientos sobre el asunto RSC y expresaron la opinión de que es necesario haber una mayor profundidad de la enseñanza sobre el tema, desde el punto de vista teórico y también práctico. Saber como las empresas ponen la RSC en práctica es uno de los aspectos que más despierta su interés.O presente artigo teve o objetivo de estudar a percepção dos estudantes de Administração em relação ao ensino da Responsabilidade Social Corporativa (RSC) na graduação. Para isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa de campo que consistiu em 85 entrevistas feitas por meio de um questionário elaborado com base nos resultados do estudo qualitativo de Silva e Chauvel (2009). O questionário foi aplicado a alunos de graduação que pertenciam a quatro instituições de ensino superior do estado do Rio de Janeiro e estavam prestes a se formar ou tinham se formado no último ano. Os resultados apontaram que os entrevistados consideram a RSC um tema importante. Mostraram que eles percebem que o espaço dado ao assunto na graduação é insuficiente e avaliam que o tema é abordado de forma superficial. Os estudantes declararam que aprenderam mais sobre RSC em meios externos à faculdade, como revistas, mídia, jornais e no próprio trabalho. Além disso, os entrevistados mostraram ter dúvidas e questionamentos sobre o assunto RSC e expressaram a opinião de que é preciso haver um maior aprofundamento do ensino sobre o tema, do ponto de vista teórico e também prático.
