Resumo: This paper presents, through a literature review, some of the main initiatives since the invention of the press that sought to extend the consumption of books and/or diversify its readership by using the editing, which allowed, among other things, the emergence of the paperback. As a result, it is argued that despite massification and popularization of the book have occurred only in the nineteenth century, the editorial interventions developed in this period in order to reach classes before non-readers were already applied since other centuries.

As a result, it is argued that despite massification and popularization of the book have occurred only in the nineteenth century, the editorial interventions developed in this period in order to reach classes before non-readers were already applied since other centuries.En este artículo se presentan, a través de una revisión de la literatura, algunas de las principales iniciativas, desde la invención de la prensa, que buscaron ampliar el consumo de libros y/o diversificar el público lector usando la edición, lo que permitió, entre otras cosas, la aparición del libro de bolsillo. Como resultado, sostenemos que, aunque la popularización y la masificación del libro tengan ocurrido sólo en el siglo XIX, las intervenciones editoriales que fueran desarolladas en ese período, con la finalidad de alcanzar grupos todavia no lectores, ya eran aplicadas hace siglos.Este artigo apresenta, por meio de uma revisão de literatura, algumas das principais iniciativas desde a invenção da imprensa que buscaram ampliar o consumo de livros e/ou diversificar o seu público leitor utilizando a sua edição, o que permitiu, entre outras coisas, o surgimento do livro de bolso.
