The occupation of surrounding areas of Conservation Units must not jeopardize the priority of conservation objectives. To guarantee this priority, it is necessary to reconcile the use of natural resources and the conservation areas of Conservation Unit and it is through this context that environmental education tools can help in the maintenance of sustainable use. The objective of the present work is to initiate environmental education practices with the surrounding inhabitants of the National Forest Conservation Unit of Nísia Floresta, revealing its importance and how society can interact and promote ways for local environmental awareness, so that its collective characteristics and show how their participation is essential and effective for the long-term success of the conservation strategy based on Conservation Units. In order to do so, the environmental perception of the residents of the surrounding community was evaluated by the National Forest Conservation Unit of Nísia Floresta, which is located in the Bonfim / Guaraíra Environmental Protection Area and a socioenvironmental data survey was carried out through questionnaires and technical visits together with environmental education actions. Through the analysis of the data obtained, it was possible to verify the lack of knowledge of the residents about basic concepts about the Environment and that many are still unaware of the National Forest Conservation Unit of Nísia Floresta, even though it is in such a close reality. In this way, it was understood how environmental perception is an important tool to intercept the interaction of communities living in the vicinity of Conservation Units and that it should be widely used as an assessment tool.
