Perfil epidemiológico de pacientes vítimas de trauma ortopédico atendidos no Hospital Universitário de Lagarto em Sergipe

Trauma remains the leading cause of death in people up to 45 years old, accounting for 80% of deaths in young patients, from 18 to 24 years old, and accounting for 10% of all hospital admissions. The objective was to describe the epidemiological profile of the orthopedic trauma victims attended at the Hospital Universitário de Lagarto (HUL) in Sergipe. This is an observational, descriptive and retrospective study. Patients of 18 years or older with orthopedic traumatic injury were included, and only those whose records could not be read because of illegible hand writing were excluded. Demographic variables, trauma-related factors, and aspects of pre-hospital and hospital care were assessed. In 399 records, there was a predominance of males (63.41%) and the main age group was patients between 18 to 38 years old, corresponding to 54.89% of the sample and coming from Lizard (53.13%). The main mechanism of trauma was traffic accident involving motorcycle (31.83%), followed by falls (27.57%). The most affected region was ankle / foot, corresponding to 26.57% of the cases, followed by the knee / leg (16.04%). The majority of the patients received conservative treatment (86.72%) and no deaths were identified due to orthopedic trauma. Thus, it was concluded that there was a predominance of males, aged between 18 to 38 years old, coming from Lagarto, caused by traffic accidents with motorcycles and with a greater involvement of limbs. The main type of treatment was conservative and the average hospitalization was 4.1 days among patients submitted to surgery.
