Resumo: This article aims to present the understanding of the concept of archiving, based on Paul Otlet's publication Traité de documentation (1934), translated into Portuguese in 2018 (Documentation Treaty). It also aims to clarify how the idea of documentation came to Brazil and how it entered the Archival Science area. This is historical and documentary research, which uses as a privileged source the aforementioned work as well as its reception by the educational programs of the Administrative Department of the Public Service (DASP) and by the university courses in Archivology from the 1970s. Archival documents were addressed in Paul Otlet's proposal, the work is justified by bringing to the debate elements whose studies in Archival Science are scarce and may contribute to the strengthening of the area.
