IN THE FOLDS OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH: POLITICS OF ALLIANCE AND SOLIDARITY IN THE ESPORTS LANDSCAPE OF THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON

Resumo: This article discusses the phenomenon of social dynamics and progression in competitive practice in the particular context of the esports scene in the Brazilian Amazon, with an emphasis on the city of Belém, Pará. Based on a longitudinal ethnography with a semi-professional team, the work problematizes the extent to which two elements of the contemporary gaming experience are connected: how aspects of a social nature affect aspects of a technical nature. The results indicate that the social fabric of the esports community in Belém is shaped, maintained, and developed more around sporting camaraderie between teams and players than around an ethos of professionalism. On the other hand, the social dynamics surrounding community camaraderie are pulsating examples of alliance and solidarity policies in the face of the precariousness, vulnerabilities, and asymmetries that afflict players seeking professionalization on the esports periphery. They therefore reveal indices of informal organizations of mutual support.

A partir de una etnografía longitudinal con un equipo semiprofesional, el trabajo problematiza el grado de conexión entre dos elementos de la experiencia contemporánea de juego: la forma en que aspectos de naturaleza social afectan aspectos de naturaleza técnica. Los resultados indican que el tejido social de la comunidad de esports de Belém se configura, mantiene y desarrolla más en torno a la camaradería deportiva entre equipos y jugadores que en torno a un ethos de profesionalidad. Por otra parte, las dinámicas sociales en torno a la camaradería comunitaria son ejemplos palpitantes de políticas de alianza y solidaridad frente a la precariedad, las vulnerabilidades y las asimetrías que afligen a los jugadores que buscan la profesionalización en la periferia de los esports. Revelan, por tanto, índices de organizaciones informales de apoyo mutuo.Este artigo discute o fenômeno das dinâmicas sociais e da progressão na prática competitiva no contexto particular do cenário de esports da Amazônia brasileira, com ênfase na cidade de Belém, no Pará. A partir de uma etnografia longitudinal com uma equipe semiprofissional, o trabalho problematiza o quanto dois elementos da experiência contemporânea do jogo se conectam: o modo como aspectos de ordem social incide em aspectos de natureza técnica. Os resultados indicam que o tecido social comunitário de esports em Belém é conformado, mantido e desenvolvido mais em torno de uma camaradagem esportiva, entre equipes e jogadores, do que em torno de um ethos de profissionalismo. Por outro lado, as dinâmicas sociais que envolvem a camaradagem da comunidade são exemplos pulsantes de políticas de aliança e solidariedade diante da precariedade, das vulnerabilidades e das assimetrias que afligem os jogadores que buscam a profissionalização na periferia dos esports.
