The assistant role at the Maternity Ward

Resumo: Objective: This is an explorative, descriptive and qualitative research carried out at the Maternity Ward of theAcademicMedicalCenterof the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, from August to November of 2010 with the aim of observing the engagement and the role of the ward assistants at such a facility. 32 individuals have participated in it. From the analysis of the data found by observing the participants, six categories have been constituted: a) The role of the ward assistants by the time of pregnant woman is admitted and discharged; b) Receive and provide information: the communicational complexity at the facility; c) The difficult and consternated role of such a coadjutant at taking care of the newborn; d) The essential assistance at taking care of the puerpera; e) The solidarity towards other families; and f) Between the watch and sleep time. The conclusion is that the engagement of the ward assistants remains barely sufficient despite the practical and emotional support they provide to the puerperas.

The conclusion is that the engagement of the ward assistants remains barely sufficient despite the practical and emotional support they provide to the puerperas. Es una investigación exploratoria descriptiva, de carácter cualitativo, llevada a cabo en el Alojamiento Conjunto del Hospital Universitario de la Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina, entre agosto y noviembre de 2010, con el objetivo de observar la inserción y medidas de acompañamiento en esa unidad. Veintidós sujetos participaron del estudio. Del análisis de los datos, recogidos a través de la observación participante, surgieron seis categorías, a saber: a) El acompañante en la admisión y en el alta; b) recibir y dar información: la complejidad comunicacional en la unidad, c) el difícil papel de coadyuvante en el cuidado del recién nacido, d) la ayuda insustituible en el cuidado de la puérpera, e) la solidaridad con las otras familias, y f) entre la vigilia y el sueño. Se concluye que la inclusión del acompañante es aún modesta, a pesar del apoyo práctico y emocional que proporciona a las puérperas.Pesquisa qualitativa exploratório-descritiva, realizada no Alojamento Conjunto do Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, de agosto a novembro de 2010, com o objetivo de observar a inserção e as ações do acompanhante nessa unidade. Participaram 32 sujeitos. Da análise dos dados, coletados através da observação participante, emergiram seis categorias: a) O acompanhante na admissão e na alta; b) Receber e dar informações: a complexidade comunicacional na unidade; c) O difícil e consternado papel de coadjuvante no cuidado ao recém-nascido; d) A insubstituível ajuda no cuidado à puérpera; e) A solidariedade com as demais famílias; e f) Entre a vigília e o sono.
