Resumo: Objective: to identify the suggestive signs of pain in preterm newborns in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Bahia’s Countryside during venous puncture by applying the NIPS scale. Method: this is a descriptive and quantitative study that was made in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with 29 newborns. Results: the average gestational age was 31.9 weeks and the average birth weight was 1,718 g. 93.1% of newborns were female. 69% of newborns suggested no signs of pain. The suggestive signs of pain were contracted face, crying, arms and legs flexed and changed breathing pattern. Conclusions: the care nursing should focus on the assessment and management of pain in the newborn

Método: estudio descriptivo y cuantitativo, realizado con veintinueve recién nacidos. Resultados: la edad gestacional media fue de 31,9 semanas y el peso medio al nacer de 1.718g. El 93,1% de los recién nacidos eran del sexo femenino. Los datos apuntaron que el 69% presentaron señales sugestivas de ausencia de dolor. Las señales sugestivas de dolor fueron cara contraída, lloro, brazos y piernas flexionadas y padrón respiratorio modificado. Conclusiones: la evaluación y el manejo del dolor en el recién nacido necesitan ser vistos como un foco del cuidado integral de la enfermería.Objetivo: identificar os sinais sugestivos de dor em recém-nascidos prematuros de uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal do interior da Bahia durante a punção venosa periférica através da aplicação da escala de NIPS. Método: estudo descritivo e quantitativo, realizado em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal do interior da Bahia e realizado com 29 recém-nascidos. Resultados: A idade gestacional média foi de 31,9 semanas e o peso médio ao nascer, de 1.718 g. 93,1% dos recém-nascidos eram do sexo feminino. Os dados apontaram que 69% apresentaram sinais sugestivos de ausência de dor. Os sinais sugestivos de dor foram face contraída, choro, braços e pernas fletidos e padrão respiratório alterado.
