Resumo: The aim of this study was to understand the representations of pre-school and school attending children about the relationship between playing and learning in physical education classes. From the analysis of the interviews of 106 children aged between 5-12 who attended the public school system in Porto Alegre, we observed that children gave different meanings to the relationship between playing in these classes and learning. While for many children, when they play, they learn about rules of social behavior, movement and the imaginary world, for others, there isn’t learning in their play.
