João Cabral’s soirée: approaching identity and difference in the arts at school

Resumo: This paper aims to share and theoretically sustain, according to Cultural Studies, the pedagogical experiences that surrounded João Cabral’s Soirée: Speaking, Singing and Showing, part of a master’s thesis study. The soirée is presented as an activity capable of approximating students’ social localization, being especially adequate to make visible the theme of identity and difference. Throughout this article we support, based on Silva (2018), the importance for the school to problematize issues of identity-difference; the inseparability of identity and difference; and, the performative character of identity. We added to these theoretical considerations collected data and reflections from our participant-research. We conclude underlining the validity of the soirée to deal in a more complex manner with the identity-difference issues and highlighting the arts classes as a privileged space for it.

O sarau é apresentado como uma atividade capaz de fomentar uma aproximação com a localização social dos discentes sendo especialmente adequado para dar visibilidade para o tema da identidade e diferença. Ao longo da exposição, defendemos junto com Silva (2018) a relevância da escola problematizar questões do campo da identidade e diferença; a indissociabilidade de identidade e diferença e o caráter performativo da identidade. À essas considerações teóricas, somamos dados coletados e reflexões emanados da pesquisa participante.
