The educational Libras interpreter as a mediator of subjectivities in mathematics classes

Resumo: The present research studies the professional interpreter of Sign Brazilian Language (Libras) in his or her acting to mediate subjectivities present in mathematics classes.  Thus, the objective of this investigation was to analyze how the subjectivities present in mathematics classes have been mediated by the Libras interpreter. The methodology adopted for this investigation was the observation of mathematics classes and semi-structured interviews.  For data analysis, we opted for Discourse Analysis, which, in line with the post-structuralist approach, underpins the keyconcepts of this research. We have realized that the interpreter as well as other actors or actresses in the educational process have been in a constant becoming, besides facing their own subjectivities in classroom. We have also realized that students and teachers have had their own subjectives and the ones brought by mathematics, which has a language own. Therefore, the Libras interpreter is in the midst of several subjectivities and it is in this context that he or she plays his or her role of mediating languages – not only –.

Assim, o objetivo da investigação consistiu em analisar as subjetividades que perpassam pela atuação do(a) intérprete de Libras nas aulas de matemática. A metodologia adotada para esta investigação foi a observação de aulas de matemática e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Para a análise dos dados, optou-se pela Análise do discurso (AD), que alinhada à abordagem pós-estruturalista, fundamenta os conceitos-chave da pesquisa. Percebe-se que o(a) intérprete assim como os demais atores ou atrizes do processo educacional estão em constante devir, deparando-se em sala de aula com suas próprias subjetividades assim como de estudantes, professores(as) e as trazidas pela matemática, que possui uma linguagem própria.
