Resumo: To evaluate the effect of supplement type on nutritional value of diets based on a low-quality forage, ten Polwarth × Texel lambs (mean LW of 21 ± 3 kg), housed in metabolic cages, fed ad libitum with a grass hay (Cynodon sp.) cut with 90 days of regrowth age, were used in a double 5 x 5 Latin Square experiment. Supplements tested were urea (U), cassava meal (CM), cassava meal plus urea (CMU) or cassava meal plus sodium caseinate (CMCA). A control (H) treatment (no supplement) was also included. Hay and fiber intake, as well as fiber digestibility, rumen microbial protein synthesis and nitrogen (N) retention were the lowest (P<0.05) by lambs supplemented only with cassava meal. Total organic matter (OM), as well as digestible energy intake, rumen microbial protein synthesis and N retention were improved (P<0.05) only by animals supplemented with cassava meal plus either, caseinate or urea. Lambs non-supplemented or supplemented only with cassava meal had very lower (P<0.05) ruminal ammonia concentrations. Sugars concentration was the highest (P<0.05) in lambs supplemented only with cassava meal. Casein treatments elicited the highest (P<0.05) ruminal concentrations of amino acids and peptides. Hay utilization by lambs was not improved by any supplement tested and was markedly depressed as cassava meal was the sole supplement. This effect, however, was not due a decreasing in ruminal pH, given that the mean ruminal pH values were always near 7.0. Increased nutrients supply for lambs fed a low-quality grass hay was dependent on both, energetic and nitrogenous substrates availability. However, none of tested supplements improved the forage use by animals indicating that its utilization is not limited due a lack of substrates for rumen microorganisms. It is probably that others factors, such as those associated with physical, chemical and anatomical characteristics of forage, but not a lack of N, have limited bacterial access and forage degradation into the rumen. Moreover, it is also possible that supplements have affected the particles passage rate through the gastrointestinal tract of lambs. These effects, however, need are considered in further studies

These effects, however, need are considered in further studiesPara avaliar o efeito do tipo de suplemento sobre o valor alimentar de dietas a base de um feno de baixa qualidade, foram utilizados dez cordeiros Corriedale × Texel (PV médio de 21 ± 3 kg), mantidos em gaiolas de metabolismo, em um delineamento experimental duplo Quadrado Latino 5 x 5. Foi utilizado um feno de Tifton 85 (Cynodon dactylon x C. nlemfuensis) com 90 dias de rebrota e os suplementos testados foram uréia (U), farinha de mandioca (FM), farinha de mandioca mais uréia (FMU) ou farinha de mandioca mais caseinato de sódio (FMC). Também foi incluído um tratamento controle (F) (sem suplemento). O consumo da fibra e do feno, assim como a digestibilidade da fibra, a síntese de proteína microbiana e a retenção de nitrogênio (N) foram menores (P<0.05) pelos cordeiros suplementados apenas com farinha de mandioca. O consumo de matéria orgânica total (MO), assim como de energia digestível, a síntese de proteína microbiana e a retenção de N foram melhorados (P<0.05) somente pelos animais suplementados com farinha de mandioca mais uréia ou caseinato. Os cordeiros não suplementados ou suplementados apenas com farinha de mandioca apresentaram as menores (P<0.05) concentrações de amônia ruminal. A concentração ruminal de açúcares foi mais alta (P<0.05) nos cordeiros suplementados somente com farinha de mandioca. O tratamento com caseína proporcionou as mais altas (P<0.05) concentrações ruminais de aminoácidos e peptídeos. A utilização do feno pelos cordeiros não foi melhorada por nenhum dos suplementos testados e foi marcadamente prejudicada quando a farinha de mandioca foi o único suplemento. Este efeito, entretanto, provavelmente não foi devido ao decréscimo no pH ruminal, pois os valores estiveram sempre próximos a 7,0. O aumento da oferta de nutrientes aos animais consumindo um feno de baixa qualidade foi dependente da suplementação concomitante de substratos energéticos e nitrogenados, mas nenhum dos suplementos testados melhorou o uso da forragem, indicando que sua utilização não é limitada pela disponibilidade de substratos às bactérias ruminais. É possível que os fatores limitantes ao aproveitamento da forragem estejam associados às características físicas, químicas e anatômicas da planta, que limitaram o acesso das bactérias aos substratos ou, de outra forma, é possível que os suplementos tenham afetado a taxa de passagem da digesta pelo trato digestivo dos animais.
