Linguistic policies in Brazil: from the domination of natives to the silence of immigrants

Resumo: The language is a symbolic-political body that is present in social relations and, consequently, in the history of societies. The conditions of operation of the Portuguese language throughout the centuries in Brazil aren’t homogeneous, since from the arrival of the Portuguese "to the tupiniquins lands ", different historical and political moments are recorded, which contributed in a different way for the fixation of the language Portuguese. It should be remembered that many of them acted to silence the languages of those who lived here, a process that happened in the face of coercive and xenophobic practices. Therefore, this article discusses the main actions of the State that served as the basis for the attempt to create a linguistic unity in Brazil.

As condições de funcionamento da língua Portuguesa ao longo dos séculos no Brasil não são homogêneas, haja vista que desde a chegada dos portugueses “às terras tupiniquins”, são registrados momentos históricos e políticos distintos, os quais contribuíram de maneira diferente para a fixação do idioma lusitano. Cabe lembrar que grande parte delas atuou para o silenciamento dos idiomas daqueles que viviam aqui, processo que aconteceu diante de práticas coercitivas e xenófobas.
