The comics in Portuguese language class as a second language (L2): report of an experience with deaf students

This research is part of the Research Project Written Understanding and Production in Portuguese, developed at the National Institute of Deaf Education, and reports the teaching of Portuguese as a second language for deaf undergraduates of the Faculty of Education. From the theoretical framework on second language learning (LIGHTBOWN; SPADA, 2004) and studies on teaching Portuguese as a second language for deaf students (QUADROS, 2004; LODI, 2002; PEREIRA, 2002, among others), a reading and writing activity was held, using the genre comics Monica's Gang. The procedures involved the initial discussion on the story in sign language, raising the students' prior knowledge, reading activity, discussion of the story and writing. The results show the importance of sign language for the deaf education and teaching based on genres to develop reading and writing abilities. The students reflected on Portuguese language structure, especially on denotative and connotative meanings, character features and Monica`s plot.
