Resumo: | This research is part of the Research Project Written Understanding and Production in Portuguese, developed at the National Institute of Deaf Education, and reports the teaching of Portuguese as a second language for deaf undergraduates of the Faculty of Education. From the theoretical framework on second language learning (LIGHTBOWN; SPADA, 2004) and studies on teaching Portuguese as a second language for deaf students (QUADROS, 2004; LODI, 2002; PEREIRA, 2002, among others), a reading and writing activity was held, using the genre comics Monica's Gang. The procedures involved the initial discussion on the story in sign language, raising the students' prior knowledge, reading activity, discussion of the story and writing. The results show the importance of sign language for the deaf education and teaching based on genres to develop reading and writing abilities. The students reflected on Portuguese language structure, especially on denotative and connotative meanings, character features and Monica`s plot. |

The students reflected on Portuguese language structure, especially on denotative and connotative meanings, character features and Monica`s plot.Este trabalho faz parte do Projeto de Pesquisa Compreensão e Produção escrita em Língua Portuguesa, desenvolvido no Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos, e relata o ensino de Língua Portuguesa como L2 para graduandos surdos do curso de Pedagogia. A partir do aporte teórico sobre aprendizagem de segunda língua (LIGHTBOWN; SPADA, 2004) e estudos sobre ensino de Língua Portuguesa escrita para surdos (QUADROS, 2004; LODI, 2002; PEREIRA, 2002, entre outros), foi realizada uma atividade de leitura e escrita, utilizando o gênero textual história em quadrinhos (HQ) da Turma da Mônica. Os procedimentos envolveram a discussão inicial sobre a história em Libras, levantando os conhecimentos prévios dos alunos, a leitura, a discussão sobre a história e a produção escrita. Os resultados mostram a importância da língua de sinais para ensino aos surdos e do ensino baseado em gêneros textuais para desenvolver habilidades de leitura e escrita dos alunos.
