Resumo: Drawing on translation process research, this study aims to analyze the translation process of professional translators and translation students. Seventeen MA, including nine professional translators and eight students without professional experience in translation, performed a translation task of a news text in the language pair Chinese Mandarin => European Portuguese. Before performing the translation task using Translog software (JAKOBSEN; SCHOU, 1999), the participants answered a profile questionnaire. After finishing the task, the participants reported on their performance through free retrospective verbal protocols. The results confirmed findings of previous  researches (JAKOBSEN, 2002; BUCHWEITZ; ALVES, 2006; PAVLOVIĆ; JENSEN, 2009; JAKOBSEN; JENSEN, 2008) that showed that students take longer to perform translation tasks than professional translators, but they did not confirm that professional translators spend more time than translation students in the revision phase (JAKOBSEN, 2002; BUCHWEITZ; ALVES, 2006). Moreover, professional translators presented a higher translation speed, by translating more words per second than translation students, but it was not possible to determine if they present a higher level of metarreflection than translation students.
