This work proposes to analyze three translations, into Portuguese, of Oscar Wilde’s short story, “Lord Savile’s Crime”, focusing on its footnotes - in the source text and in the translated text. The history of footnotes goes back many centuries and is closely linked to the development of writing and printing over time. Initially handwritten, these footnotes were often used to comment on or explain the main text, and today they continue to be an important tool for providing additional information, referencing sources, and clarifying points in academic, literary, and scientific texts. In our research, the analysis of the footnotes of the short story Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, by Oscar Wilde, will be analyzed in three different translations, including the online version made for Kindle e-reader. We will use as a theoretical reference the writings of Genette (1987), which provide a more comprehensive and holistic approach to understanding literary works and paratexts. We will also examine the contribution of Grafton (1998), who investigates how footnotes emerged as a response to the need to provide additional information or citations in printed texts. In the field of translation, we will use Lawrence Venuti's theory (1995), which addresses the concepts of foreignization and domestication in the translation of literary texts, applying these assumptions based on the analysis of the footnotes of the aforementioned Wilde story in the selected translations.
