Resumo: INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization states that, every year, about 1.25 million deaths are caused by traffic accidents (TA) (WHO, 2015). TA is a world problem, especially in emerging countries, leading to a high number of deaths and significant social expenses with their victims. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed the profile of victims involved in motorcycle accidents, and were using the motorcycle as their transportation, who were assisted by the Fire Department in the city of Uberlândia. METHODOLOGY: This was a transversal, retrospective, descriptive and quantitative study. The databank of SIDS (Sistema Integrado de Defesa Social) of the Fire Department (CBMMG) provided 4,774 BO – Bulletins of Occurrence for the period 1st of January 2015 to September 2018, involving motorcycle accidents, for a retrospective analysis. The data collected were structured in na electronic spreadsheet (Microsoft Office Excel for Windows®) and, subsequently, transported to the software IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 for Windows®, for data processing. All tests were done at the 0.05 significance level. All continuous data were tested for normality of distribution by Kolmogorov Smirnov Liliefors’ test. RESULTS: None of the variables followed the Normal or Gaussian distribution (p < 0.001). The comparison of independence between motorcycle power and ECG values indicated no significant differences (X2 = 4.91, p = 0.961), as well as for the RTS scale (X2 = 6.37, p = 0.783). Low representation of high power motorcycle in the sample (total n = 5,802), did not allow to analyze the profile of accidents with bikes above 300-400 cm3; but analyses with these groups showed basically the same profile as the categories 250 to 300 cm3. The greatest frequency of victims were male, single, with bachelor’s degrees, riding motorcycles above 250 cm3, involving accidents with small vehicles, between 18:01 and 24:00 hours, but highly significant between 06:01 and 12:00. However, colisions between motorcycles and automobiles, happened, in most cases, between small vehicles and bikes up to 249 cm3. Most accidents happened in week days, especially between Wednesday and Friday, and the victims were directed to the reference UAI (Integrated Service Unit). In relation to notification and occurrence of deaths, death at the scene was not predominant. In contrast, in relation to RTS, there a variation between 7 and 12 points, thus indicating low grade injuries. CONCLUSION: Motorcycle accidents in Uberlândia occur as a result of a weakened traffic safety culture, thus increasing the number of victims that are rescued by COBOM (Fire Department). In contrast, it is necessary to properly fill in the forms (Bulletins of Occurrence), to detail the clinical conditions of the victims, for better therapeutic approach, and of the accident, for better subsequent clarification. It is important to involve the whole society for improving quality of life and transit, as a strategy to reduce grievance, as well as public expenses with the health system.
