The interpretive competence mobilization on conference acting:: a reflection based on the PACTE´s model

This paper presents a reflection about PACTE’s (2003) model of translation competence, relating it to the sub-competences along with interpreting practice. Specifically, the conference interpreting on Brazilian Sign Language-Portuguese interpreter’s performance, acting in teams and in booths. It aims to rise questions and to present a reflection about this model’s sub-competences applicability on the interpreting activity to mobilize an interpretive competence. In the Translation Studies field there is a distinction that defines translation and interpretation processes. The practice of interpreting is related to the fact that the professional interpreter is involved in the discussion; their words are destined to a direct recipient and aims to cause a faster reaction than in the translation practice. Following Camargo (2014), we looked to the interpreting process made by National Congress of Research in Translation and Interpreting of Brazilian Sign Language and Portuguese Language interpreters, formed by six members who were interviewed and observed. We propose this reflection on where and which moments the sub-competences are mobilized by the interpreters team. In general, all five sub-competences described by PACTE are activated during the interpreting practice. However, there are improvements and different moments. Based on the results, we hope to contribute with these reflections about the necessary competences needed for the interpreting activity.
