Gender and the Division of Translation Labor: the Case of Translated Poetry in Brazil

Resumo: Although women make up most of the workforce employed in the translation market in Brazil, their labor is not employed in the same proportion when the translation of different textual genres and languages are concerned. Based on a study by sampling on translated poetry published by national publishers with an expressive production and circulation network, in this paper I argue that, in such editorial context, it is possible to establish relationships between the gender of translators and textual genres, as well as between the gender of translators and translated languages; relationships that are based on a male hierarchy anchored in the sexual division of labor. The same data set provided information about the genre and continent of origin of the translated authors, enabling reflections both on the division of writing work based on gender and the directionality of translation flows.

A partir de un estudio por muestreo sobre la poesía traducida publicada por editoriales nacionales con una red expresiva de producción y circulación argumento en este artículo que, en dicho contexto editorial, es posible establecer relaciones entre el género de la persona que traduce y el género textual, así como entre el género de la persona que traduce y el idioma traducido, relaciones que se asientan en una jerarquía masculina anclada en la división sexual del trabajo. La misma recolecta de datos permitió obtener informaciones sobre el género y continente de origen de las autoras y autores traducidos, posibilitando reflexiones sobre la división del trabajo de escritura con base en el género y la direccionalidad de los flujos de traducción.Embora as mulheres componham a maior parte da força de trabalho no mercado de trabalho de tradução no Brasil, sua mão de obra não é empregada na mesma proporção na tradução dos diferentes gêneros textuais e idiomas. A partir de um estudo feito por amostragem sobre a poesia traduzida publicada por editoras nacionais com expressiva rede de produção e distribuição, argumento neste artigo que, no contexto editorial em questão, é possível estabelecer relações entre gênero de quem traduz e gênero textual, assim como entre gênero de quem traduz e idioma traduzido, relações essas que se assentam sobre uma hierarquia masculina ancorada na divisão sexual do trabalho.
