Sign language interpreting in Brazil from 1907 to 1959

The history of sign languages interpreting ”‹”‹configures a little explored field, and this can be observed in superficial historical characterizations of this practice in academic works. This article aims to discuss the recording of sign language interpreting in Brazil in the first six decades of the twentieth century. For this purpose, based on a bibliographic and documentary research, it makes use of a set of documents maintained by the Historical Collection of the National Institute of Deaf Education (INES), dated from the period between 1907 and 1959. This set is constituted by the correspondence book of said institution, an edition of the magazine of the Brazilian Association of Deaf-Mutes and the annals of the 1st National Conference of Teachers of the Deaf. In addition to this set, the Civil and Commercial Procedure Code of the Federal District (1910) was also selected. After, it is observed that sign language interpreting practices, in the period, are characterized by aspects of community interpreting and are presented mainly in legal and associative contexts. In this sense, it is considered that the issues of citizenship and law challenged the exercise of sign language interpreting in the early 20th century.
