Intersemiotic Translation and Adaptation of Popular Narratives in Hoje é dia de Maria

This paper aims to analyse intersemiotic translation and adaptation of popular narratives in ‘Hoje é dia de Maria’ (2005), using the script developed for the theatrical production and the micro-series adapted for television. The theoretical framework is based on theories of Translation Studies, Intersemiotic Translation and Theory of Adaptation, more specifically by Jakobson (2004), Hutcheon (2013), and Plaza (2013). Methodologically, after compiling scenes from the micro-series and excerpts from the script, a descriptive study is carried out on the original narratives and the subsequent adaptation and intersemiotic translation for the micro series. Findings have shown that the popular narratives present in ‘Hoje é dia de Maria’ go through the process of textual adaptation changing the text type to be interconnected in the script construction that revolves around Maria. Along with this process, intersemiotic translation recodes the verbal text of the script in the audiovisual semiotic medium of television, combining verbal and non-verbal languages available to constitute the micro-series based on popular culture.
