This text by Choay was originally written for the Nara Conference on Authenticity, organizes by UNESCO and the Agency for Cultrual Affairs of Japan. It is a relevant writing due to the rigor of the analysis on the term authenticity, which plays a fundamental role in the criteria for World Heritage but whose definition remains imprecise. Choay highlights  that the various disciplinary fields should operate from a univocal definition and epistemological questioning of the concepts they use. It is through this valuable exercise that she revisits the history of the concept of authenticity in Western culture and explores its possible connections and implications in the present. Françoise Choay is a historian and professor who works on issues related to architecture, urbanism, and the preservation of cultural heritage. This translation sought to stay as close as possible to the original in terms of the construction of the reasoning, phrasing, and vocabulary used by Choay.  The foreign terms used  by the author have been kept in the original language to bring Brazilian readers closer to the experience that Choay’s readers have in various cultural contexts through the UNESCO book. All footnotes and references have been retained as they appear in the original, without adapting them to Brazilian standards.
