Child rearing practices used by the family with childrenmay or may not support the acquisition of their independence, and thisproject intends to describe how mothers from a mid-high educational leveldeal with this aspect in educating their children aging from three to eight. Therefore, 110 mothers were interviewed according to the Biasoli-Alves &Graminha's Reestructured Guide (1979) which 43 questions thatinvestigate who - mother or child - directs daily routine situations. Theresults demonstrate that the mothers maintain the structure of the dailyroutine, leaving a huge space for the child's decision, demanding fulfilmentfor a small number of rules (mainly in the health and hygiene areas). Thisprofile indicates concern with the child's independence development; it issimilar to the one considered adequate by the parents orientation literatureand agrees with the adopted by the urban mid classes.
