Resumo: The purpose of this article is to analyze education and its relationship with regional development within the context of implementing 2014-2024 National Education Plan, focusing on Basic Education. The article is characterized as a review based on the principles of bibliographic and documentary research, using primary and secondary sources. It is justified by the lack of discussions involving the relationship between education and regional development, in particular the analyses directed to basic education. Researchers support the premise that education contributes to poverty reduction and regional development, as the expansion of intellectual capacity generates more wealth and turns the integration to labor market easier. There are major challenges both in universalizing access to basic education and in ensuring quality standards in Brazil. It is concluded that the premise in which education is associated only with economic growth and income improvement must be overcome. Key words: Education and development. Educational policies. Regional Development.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a educação e sua relação com o desenvolvimento regional no contexto da implementação do Plano Nacional de Educação 2014-2024 com foco na Educação Básica.  O artigo caracteriza-se como de revisão apoiando-se nos princípios da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, utilizando-se de fontes primárias e secundárias. Justifica-se pela carência de discussões envolvendo a relação educação e desenvolvimento regional em particular, análises direcionadas à educação básica. Pesquisadores apostam a premissa de que a educação contribui na redução da pobreza, no desenvolvimento regional, pela ampliação da capacidade intelectual gerando mais riquezas e integrando-se com maior facilidade do mercado de trabalho. No Brasil, há grandes desafios tanto na universalização do acesso à educação básica como na garantia de padrões de qualidade. Conclui-se que há de se superar a premissa de que a educação está associada unicamente ao crescimento econômico e a melhoria de renda. Palavras-chave: Educação e desenvolvimento.
