Translation as a foreign language teaching strategy: beliefs and reflections

Resumo: The use of translation as a tool for teaching and learning foreign languages is a controversial topic among educators and linguists. Although widely employed in different learning contexts, especially in primary education, opinions on its effectiveness and impact on students' language skills are divergent. In this perspective, we propose a reflection on translation as a didactic strategy and the different conceptions that involve its use in the processes of teaching and learning foreign languages. The methodological approach chosen for this investigation was qualitative, and the data collection methods were an open questionnaire and a written narrative. We conclude that translation can positively contribute to language teaching and learning, provided that it is used consciously and strategically by teachers, considering the characteristics and needs of the students, and not as an isolated or main strategy in the foreign language teaching process.

Embora seja amplamente empregada em diferentes contextos de aprendizagem, principalmente na educação básica, as opiniões sobre sua eficácia e impacto na formação de habilidades linguísticas dos alunos são divergentes. É nessa perspectiva que propomos uma reflexão acerca da tradução como estratégia didática e das diferentes concepções que envolvem o seu uso nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras. A abordagem metodológica escolhida para esta investigação foi a qualitativa e os métodos para a coleta de dados foram o questionário aberto e a narrativa escrita.
