Resumo: The aim of this paper is to discuss the phenomenon of football in the Physical Education classes. The work springs from systematic observations carried on at a public school in Campinas, SP, in which, during almost a full school bimester, I followed the daily activities of an 8th grade group in their Physical Education classes. I could observe that football, beyond a privileged practice, was a stage for prejudice and inequality. Such facts drove me to the comprehension that the students, when understanding ‘the other’ with a stereotyped view, would eventually label her as inferior, which, consequently, did not allow a dialog on equal basis between them. Thus, I believe it necessary to understand ‘the other’ within the principle of alterity – which, more than relevant, becomes then a must.

El trabajo es fruto de observaciones sistemáticas llevadas a cabo en una escuela pública en Campinas, SP, en la cual, por casi un bimestre lectivo, acompañé el cuotidiano de clases de Educación Física de un grupo de octavo año. Pude observar que el fútbol, además de una práctica privilegiada, fue escenario para prejuicios y desigualdades. Estos hechos llevaron a que comprendiera que los alumnos, al comprendieren al ‘otro’ en una visión estereotipada, terminan por rotularlo como inferior, lo que, consecuentemente, no permitió un dialogo en términos iguales entre ellos. Así, pienso ser necesaria la comprensión del ‘otro’ a partir de la alteridad, lo que, además de relevante, se vuelve en una necesidad.O objetivo deste artigo é discutir o fenômeno do futebol nas aulas de educação física. O trabalho é fruto de observações sistemáticas feitas numa escola pública de Campinas-SP, na qual, durante quase um bimestre letivo, acompanhei o cotidiano das aulas de educação física de uma 8ª série. Pude observar que o futebol, para além de prática privilegiada, foi palco de preconceitos e desigualdades. Estes fatos levaram-me à compreensão de que os alunos, ao compreenderem o “outro” numa visão estereotipada, acabaram rotulando-o como inferior, o que, conseqüentemente, não permitiu um diálogo em pé de igualdade entre os pares.
