Documents for private use, such as letters, but have always been used to view the past, only in recent years were considered sources with great potential to be objects of historical research. Inserting in this perspective, the Historical Archive of Rio Grande do Sul is to provide the public with a new collection called "Private Archive Julio de Castilhos," Rio-Grandense Republican leader, who acquired national projection for the period of the Old Republic. Add documentation of intimate character, which in a first analysis, reflects the intense political activity and family, between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. From the organization and provision of documentation, we discuss the potential of historical sources such as matches, drawing the attention that they are carriers of knowledge and experiences, therefore, the load time of the experience - discontinuous and fragmented. Such an approach allows a better understanding of the past, a humanization of the so-called "big characters" and the recovery of everyday.
